Shared parking, smarter outcomes for a growing school community

St. John XXIII Catholic College is a Kindergarten to Year 12 school located in Stanhope Gardens, in  Western Sydney. To meet growing student demand, Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese sought to increase the College’s capacity from 2,040 to 2,200 students, adding nine staff members and bringing the total school population to 2,383.

Mostyn Copper on behalf of Catholic Schools Parramatta Diocese engaged ptc. to prepare a Transport Impact Assessment to support the Complying Development Certificate (CDC) application.

ptc.’s approach to transport studies at schools includes undertaking a student and staff survey in addition to a review of general transport and traffic environment. Site-specific data supports our analysis and tailored recommendations.

A key focus of the assessment was demonstrating that the College’s existing Pick-up and Drop-off (PUDO) arrangements, two designated Kiss & Drop zones and three car parks, could accommodate the increased school population without requiring additional infrastructure.

The College’s car parking areas presented an opportunity to demonstrate efficient land use. Two of the parking areas, including the largest one, are shared with the adjacent St John XXIII Catholic Church. Church visitors use the car park exclusively on weekends when the College is closed.

The complementary usage pattern, where the parking demand of one land use fills the gap left by another, maximises car parking utilisation without the need for additional dedicated spaces. This approach to shared parking offers a transferable model for mixed-use developments where different land uses generate demand at different times.
