Making room for bicycles on parking spaces

The
public sector’s push for more bicycle infrastructure continues. With bike
sharing programs going crazy worldwide, and the cycle lanes in New York and
Sydney generating significant debate and press, Victoria’s Moreland Council is also taking steps to supporting this sustainable means of transport.

Moreland
Council has divided a car parking space on Victoria Street into eight parking
spaces for bikes as part of a three-month trial, during which time council
officers will survey traders, cyclists and motorists about the proposal. The
trial is part of the council’s integrated transport strategy, which encourages
more people to leave their cars at home.

Although
it is only a small test, it will reveal whether the demand for bicycle related
services would increase if such facilities were available.
