Traffic engineering solutions support Sydney’s largest hospital redevelopment

The $940 million redevelopment of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital represents one of NSW’s most significant healthcare infrastructure investments. This ambitious project will deliver expanded and improved facilities to serve the 740,000 people in the surrounding community. The expansion features a new 15-storey hospital building alongside a five-storey extension, increasing the hospital’s capacity to provide critical healthcare services to inner Sydney residents.

ptc. role during the construction stage was to ensure traffic and access matters were dealt with expertise in this complex healthcare redevelopment. Our team provided concept design advice for the Emergency Department and Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) drop-off areas, recognising the critical importance of efficient patient access during medical emergencies.

We also designed loading dock access and egress points to support the hospital’s substantial logistics requirements. Our traffic report detailed existing site conditions related to traffic and parking, while documenting the design development work undertaken through to the for-construction stage.

To manage the construction phase impacts, we prepared both a Construction Traffic Management Plan aiming to reduce disruption to hospital operations and surrounding traffic. Finally, our team has been engaged to provide compliance documentation (Construction and Occupation Certificates).
