Expert traffic engineering advice for a $605 million data centre expansion

Located just 1 km from Sydney’s CBD, DigiCo’s SYD1 Data Centre in Ultimo is undergoing a significant $605 million expansion to meet the growing demand for large-scale and data centre capacity. The project involves the addition of two levels to the current facility and the conversion of existing floor space into plant and electrical space. The site has strong public transport connectivity, sitting less than 250m from the Exhibition Centre light rail stop, approximately 800m from Pyrmont Bay ferries, and within walking distance of the future Pyrmont Metro station on the Sydney Metro West route.

ptc. provided traffic engineering advice to support DigiCo and Census Advisory through the State Significant Development Application process, which received approval in December 2025.

Given the operational characteristics of the facility, low staff numbers and low visitor numbers, the development will contain only 11 car parking spaces and nine bicycle spaces, along with end-of-trip facilities. Our team worked carefully to ensure the parking and access solution was appropriate for the facility’s actual operational needs given the highly accessible location.

Our scope included a Transport Impact Assessment, a Green Travel Plan, and a Construction Traffic Management Plan. We also provided concept design advice for parking and vehicular access areas, including swept path analysis to confirm that vehicle movements could be safely and efficiently accommodated on site.
