Royal Randwick Racecourse secured SSDA approval for non-race day events

Approved in October 2025, the State Significant Development Application (SSDA) enables Royal Randwick Racecourse to host non-race day events ranging from corporate functions and exhibitions to music festivals. The proposal allows the iconic venue to diversify its usage beyond major race days, supporting cultural, music and community activities throughout the year.

ptc. has maintained a relationship with Australian Turf Club for more than 10 years, providing traffic engineering services across their venues including Canterbury Park, Rosehill Racecourse, Warwick Farm and Royal Randwick Racecourse. This long-standing partnership has enabled our team to develop extensive knowledge of the site’s specific characteristics and operational requirements.

Our team was engaged by MostynCopper on behalf of Australian Turf Club to provide traffic engineering services for the SSDA submission. The Transport Impact Assessment (TIA) focused on modelling the impact on the road network considering different event sizes based on patron numbers.

We undertook extensive traffic modelling to assess three scenarios: existing Saturday conditions with no events, Low and Medium Impact events (5,000-10,000 patrons) and High Impact events (10,000-15,000 patrons). To forecast future traffic generation, we conducted intercept surveys during race events to identify existing travel behaviour. Our analysis examined the impact on 11 intersections surrounding the racecourse.

A key aspect of the project was to propose a solution to deal with the large number of ride share trips. Therefore, we formalised an Event Management Plan consolidating pick-up and drop-off management procedures, setting out locations for different user groups and integration with light rail services.

Our analysis concluded that non-race day events could be accommodated within the existing road and transport network, subject to ongoing event planning and demand management.
