The house on the highway

Some amazing photos emerged this week from Xiazhangyang, Zhejiang province in China, where an elderly couple refused to leave their home after local officials ordered it demolished to make way for a new highway.

According to News.com.au, the home owners claimed that the compensation would not be enough for them to rebuild, and refused to allow the building to be demolished. The authorities were forced to build a new motorway around their half-demolished block of flats, leaving the apartments either side intact to prevent the building from collapsing.

A recent change to the law in China has meant that authorities are now unable to demolish homes without the owner’s formal consent. The house is now an unofficial roundabout in the middle of the highway to the nearby Wenling airport.
