Hertz launched their own car sharing scheme in Australia, called Hertz on Demand. Initially available in Sydney, the service will offer members access to a fleet of 30 cars parked throughout the city and able to be booked online.
According to a press release, the number of spaces will jump to around 100 by next year, with rates starting at AU$6 per hour, including fuel, cleaning, maintenance and insurance.
According to CarRentals.co.uk, the Sydney car sharing market has more than tripled over the last three years, saving residents an estimated AU$21 million a year. Recent SGS Economics and Planning research, commissioned by the City of Sydney, shows that the economic benefits for both residents and businesses outweigh the costs of owning a car by 19 to one.
Sydney’s Lord Mayor, Clover Moore, further added that every parking space in the city for a shared car replaces the need for 12 privately owned vehicles, easing congestion in parking and on the roads.
