<span style=”font-size: 10pt; font-family: calibri;”>Following last week’s article on the Sydney Census results on transportation showing that the city’s use of public transport is increasing; this week we turn the spotlight to Australia’s most car reliant city: Adelaide.

<span style=”font-size: 10pt; font-family: calibri;”>The Census figures show that nearly two-thirds, or 64 per cent, of Adelaide dwellers drive to work – the most of any capital city. According to AdelaideNow.com.au, contributing factors include affordable all-day CBD parking, employee salary packages including cars as part of a workplace fleet, and the public transport system not effectively meeting the needs of commuters.

<span style=”font-size: 10pt; font-family: calibri;”>All day parking in the city ranges mostly between $12 and $15 a day, and according to AdelaideNow.com.au, with relatively cheap early-bird rates across CBD car parks costing workers as little as $57.50 a week, compared with an adult 10-trip multi-trip public transport ticket cost of $31.90.

<span style=”font-size: 10pt; font-family: calibri;”>Figures obtained by The Advertiser in August showed public transport patronage had slumped by 2.44 million boardings in the past year. A spokeswoman for the Government said that they were working to provide commuters with a more modern, efficient and reliable public transport system. Happy days!
